There are times when I go on vacation and think it means all my good habits can be tossed out the window. Bring on the chips, pop candy. You can’t gain weight or get sick eating this way because you are on vacation, right? It is the same as saying the crumbs of cookies don’t have any calories. Yeah right. I hate coming back from vacation 10 pounds heavier and lethargic. So here are my tips.
1. If you are driving make sure you drink more water than normal. This guarantees you have to stop at the rest stops to go to the bathroom. At the rest stop walk up and down the length of the parking lot. Stretch out your legs (put your foot up on a bench and bend forward). This will bring circulation to your legs and keep you from stiffening up.
2. If you will be eating out start every meal with a bowl of soup, small salad or a plate of fruit. This will fill you up so you most likely won’t want to eat too many french fries.
3. Find a grocery store or a convenience store and buy a gallon jug of water. I hate paying $4.50 for a small bottle of hotel water.
4. If the hotel has a pool go swimming. Even if you tread water you are using all of your muscles to stay afloat. I swim laps for 15 minutes. Once the pool was so full I could only go along the edge but I got some exercise in.
5. In the hotel room do squats and pushups. If you do 10 squats and 5 pushups back to back without stopping you will get a strength and cardio workout all in one.
6. Find a restaurant you can walk to. A brisk stroll after dinner is great to help with after dinner fullness.
7. Back to the water, the more I drink the less I want to snack and it is the snacking that puts on the pounds.
