Yesterday I was at a good friend’s 50th birthday party.  He is a HUGE inspiration to me as he doesn’t let “age” restrict him.  He works hard to keep in shape and when you look at him you truly start to believe in the idea that 50 is the new 30.  When I want to be lazy I think of him and I do something…even if it is just getting out and walking around the block…I just do something/anything.

One thing I never let people say in my office is “I guess I am just getting old”.  I don’t let patients play the age card.  I have seen patients of all ages make changes.  It depends on IF you want to make a change. It does take effort and consistency.  I tell my patients I want to be 12 again.  When I was 12, I didn’t have to exercise or stretch.  I played sports because it was fun, not because I was supposed to exercise. Now I have to stretch and do my core exercises daily in order to stay functioning and functionally fit.  I have to work out with kettlebells to keep my cardio and strength up.  If I go longer than three days without doing my core exercises or longer than a week without doing kettlebells I start getting stiff and sore. I refuse to give into the pain so I stay on top of my exercise program.

Whatever your choice of exercise is you need to do it consistently.  Consistency is THE key.  The stretches I give patients to help with their pain need to be done daily.  30 seconds several times per day is all it takes to make a change.  Never settle with pain, don’t get used to it.  Keep working at being in the best shape of your life.

So what can you do?

1.  Start parking several parking stalls over from your usual so you can get more walking in.

2.  Walk down the street to the corner and back.  So what if it takes you 5 minutes.  I have a patient who started walking 10 minutes a day – 5 minutes one way then 5 minutes back.  She is now up to 20 minutes a day and has done this consistently for over a month.  Do you think she is making great changes?  You bet she is!

3.  Do 5 squats during commercials.

4.  Pull your tummy to your spine and hold 5 seconds.  Do this 5-10-100 times per day.

5.  Take your cart back to the store after you have unloaded your groceries.

6.  Take the stairs at work or walk up the escalator instead of standing.

7.  Do squats while you are brushing your teeth.

8.  Stretch your arms behind you as you walk to the bathroom or in line at the grocery store.  This will bring your shoulder blades back and help with neck and upper back pain.

9.  Cross your leg and bend forward to stretch your hips.  Do this when you are in a meeting or sitting at lunch.

Decide to make a change and stick with it.

One of the great things about living in Washington State is how late the sun stays out during the summer. At the peak of summer we can have sunlight until 10P.M. Even with all of the sun and daylight we get I’m amazed at how many don’t go outside.

One of the best things you can do for your body is get outside and play. When the sun is shining here we teach our kettlebell classes outside. Everyone gets a little sun on their face (Vitamin D) and some fresh air. We play, we have fun, and we’re moving.

There is no reason for you not getting outside for at least 15 minutes each day. Walk, run, play, or swing your kettlebell. It will do your body good.

How do you go through life? Do you think that life just happens to you or do take charge of your life? I try to live all aspects of my life with intent. When I am adjusting a person’s spine, I don’t just put the force in their and hope the right thing happens. I put my focus on precision, muscle release and movement. There are times when I know my intent was what got the job done. The bone almost moves by itself. I know this may sound woo-woo but I have been a chiropractor a long time and I know when the bone and I become one. My patient’s and I joke about me being the spine whisperer.

Intent is extremely important with stretching and exercising. I had a patient that I put on a stretching program who wasn’t getting great results. I asked him if he was focusing on his stretches or just going through the motions. He thought about it and realized he wasn’t paying attention to what he was doing. When he started to focus on the stretching he started to improve. How many times have you stretched or exercised without actually being present.

I bet a lot of you go to the gym and lift weights without really feeling what you are doing. You sit on the press machine and just press up. No thought to what muscles you are using, no thought to your breath. You most likely are watching someone or something other than paying attention to the movements. I know I am guilty of this is kettelbell class, but luckily kettlebells are self correcting. Having a heavy bell over your head with no machinery to keep it stable makes you come back and focus.

Pay attention to where you just float through life. Have some intent and focus with what you do and see the changes happen.

We can all learn something from Jessica…can you imagine how incredible our lives would be if we started off each day just like Jessica? :)

I started working out with kettlebells in October 2004 and I haven’t been to a typical gym since.  I don’t need to, the kettlebell does it all for me.  The kettlebell gave me my life back and I will be forever greatful to Pavel Tsatsouline for introducing it to me.

The best part of the kettlebell workout is that it gives me whole body strength.  When I would go to the gym and lift weights, I was taught isolation exercises.  I did my biceps, my triceps, my upper back…I never used all of my muscles together.  Unfortunately we do not use our muscles in isolation in life.  You reach for a can on the top shelf and you have to use your arms, shoulders, stomach, buttocks and legs.  Everything works together.

The RKC system teaches tension, not isolation.  When I do a kettlebell press or a swing or a snatch my entire body is working in unison.  I keep all muscles tight.  This is what keeps my body safe when I am doing my job as a chiropractor.  There are times when I have to reach around a large patient and put my body in compromising positions in order to get the work done.  I always make sure my patient is safe, so there are times when I am not in the best body positions.  Because I have trained my muscles to work together, they all work for me to keep me safe.  My core, legs, buttocks and arms fire to do their job.  I don’t worry anymore about blowing out my back as my core activates and braces me with every movement I do  I love this feeling of strength and stability.
